Curonian Spit
The Curonian Spit is a 98 km long and 1- 4 km wide sand dune peninsula in the south-east of the Baltic Sea, shared between Lithuania (52 km) and the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad (43 km). On the western side of the peninsula you face the Baltic Sea and on the east side - the “inside” – there is a large lagoon. Both Russian and Lithuanian parts of the spit are national parks. Since 2000, the Curonian Spit has been on the UNESCO's World Heritage List under cultural criteria "V" (an outstanding example of a traditional human settlement, land-use, or sea-use which is representative of a culture [...], or human interaction with the environment especially when it has become vulnerable under the impact of irreversible change). The Curonian Spit is a ideal Summer Holiday destination. To a visitor the Curonian Spit offers a rare combination of natural beauty and singular architecture. Houses built in the peculiar style of folk architecture. The town of Neringa consists of several fishermen‘s settlements: Alksnyne, Juodkrante, Pervalka, Preila and Nida. Seeing the high sandy and tree-covered dunes stretching along the coast, one cannot but marvel at the uncomparable uniqueness of this narrow stretch of land. |
